The DEVISE4KE project, a collaborative initiative focused on enhancing digital learning and technical education, convened for its third transnational meeting in Bremen, Germany, from February 17–22, 2024. The partnership includes the University of Bremen, Warnborough College Ireland, Maristak Durango, University of Rongo, and three mixed secondary schools from Homa Bay, Kenya.
A Step Forward in Digital Learning Implementation
The week began with an official welcome by Dr. Peter Kaune and project coordinator Vivian Harberts, followed by interactive workshops led by Dr. Julian Ng (WCI) on low-energy digital learning solutions. Kenyan participants engaged in practical exercises, gaining firsthand experience in innovative teaching methods.
On February 18, Vivian Harberts conducted a key session on Learning and Work Tasks (LWTs), an essential approach in the project’s methodology. This was followed by training in active online learning, encouraging teachers to embrace digital tools beyond conventional classroom techniques. Additionally, Associate Professor Christian Staden introduced the Task Manager tool, providing valuable insights into creating structured digital lessons.
A highlight of the meeting was a hands-on LWT on ICT entrepreneurship, facilitated by Iratxe Lerrajete from Maristak Durango on February 20. This session promoted business-oriented thinking among educators, encouraging them to integrate entrepreneurial skills into TVET programs.
Blending Education with Cultural Immersion
The meeting was not only about learning; it also incorporated cultural and industrial experiences. Participants visited the Beck’s Factory on February 19, where they explored the beer production process and its long-standing traditions. Later, they gathered for a networking dinner at the renowned Bremer Ratskeller restaurant.
On February 21, the group visited the School Museum, an excursion that showcased the evolution of Germany’s educational system from the 1900s to modern-day practices. This offered valuable perspectives on historical and contemporary approaches to education, complementing the project’s focus on digital transformation.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude and excitement for the next in-person session in Kenya, scheduled for October 2024. DEVISE4KE continues to advance its mission of enhancing digital teaching methodologies, fostering a sustainable and tech-driven future for TVET education.
