European partners visiting Misori Comprehensive school

Visit to Mfangano Island

DEVISE4KE European partners from Germany, Ireland and Spain visited this large island on Lake Victoria from 3-5 October 2025. As previously mentioned, teachers from 5 schools on Mfangano Island had requested to participate in the teacher training conducted as part of our 2nd transnational meeting in Kenya.

  • A typical classroom in one of the schools
  • We visited the Kakrigu Comprehensive School
  • Visiting another school on the north of Mfangano Island
  • Outside our accommodation on Mfangano Island

Visits were made to some of the participating schools such as the Kakrigu Comprehensive School, and several others like the St Gabriel Misori Primary School and the St Linus Misori Junior Secondary School. The trip was organised by George Ochoro, the SED NGO project coordinator and the secretary of the SERAKWA Self-Help Group.

Apart from visiting the schools, European partners also visited Takawiri Island and the famous Mawanga Cave, a significant archaeological site featuring rock art that is between 2000 to 4000 years old. They also managed to try the delicious Nile perch which is endemic to the Lake.

  • Three on a bike is common on Mfangano Island
  • Hiking halfway up a mountain to get to the Mawanga Caves
  • The Mawanga Caves are a UNESCO-protected archaeological site
  • Getting on a boat to Takawiri Island

Huge thanks to George and his team, and Evans Ogolah, for arranging this very exciting trip.
